Road trip to Rockport Maine! The Maine Home & Design Show will be held this weekend June 30 – July 1. This will be Geoffrey Warner Studio’s first year of participation. We would like to invite everyone to come to Rockport to enjoy the show. Stop by our booth–lucky number 77. We’ve been madly building Owl Stools and Rolling Owls–come try a seat and view our live edge wooden tables and continuous armchairs!
The Maine Home & Design Show will feature 150 exhibitors including 50+ artists. The Maine Home+Design Show has constructed a 30,000 square foot clear span semi-permanent structure on the grounds of Camden Hills Regional High School in Rockport. They promise that the experience will be like walking into the pages of their magazine. Exhibitors will range from home furnishings to kitchen & bath to landscape & design. Architects will be on hand to answer questions. It should be quite a show!
See you in Rockport this weekend!

As we described in an earlier Custom Doors blog, Geoff recently made four wooden live edge doors for a NYC family. During the installation, he needed to get creative and used a sheet as a dust catcher when he routed the doors for the on-site fitting. For a chuckle, checkout the brief “Geoff Goes Undercover” video. Here’s an image of two installed doors–the live edge tree panels are frame by mahogany:
During the last blog, we mentioned the great article in July Issue of Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors, here’s a link to the article if you haven’t seen the issue yet.
For folks in the Stonington Maine area, see you at the Farmer’s Market on Friday, 10-12!
Come try an Owl Stool — a great wooden stool for Kitchens, Living Rooms & Offices!

We enjoyed having Marie participate in an Owl Stool workshop and write about her experience from start to finish. She truly captured the essence of the adventure of making your own owl stool–from joining the legs to the seat and sanding to applying the final coat of oil. Marie also noticed one of our favorite moments in every workshop. It is the moment when people’s eyes light up with the sense of accomplishment and we hear “Wow, I made that”.
If you would like to try out an Owl stool, stop by the Gallery or visit us at the Stonington Farmer’s Market beginning June 8th.

We are always grateful when a publication showcases our work–it opens a door to a new set of viewers. Thank you to Design New England who featured our new Rolling Owl Stools in their May/June issue. Check out the “Local Wares” section and the other great features of this digital magazine.
Speaking of Doors — This week Geoff is heading to NYC to deliver the Live Edge Doors featured in an earlier blog. Everyone is amazed by their beauty. When we asked Geoff about the doors, he reflected: “These amazing live edge boards are as fine as any art or furniture I have seen. Nature’s beauty with a little help from our shop, gave a second life to what I’m sure were magnificent trees. I wish I knew their history.”
Let us know if you would like a Live Edge board from Hearne Hardwoods.
Our plan is to fill the van for the trip home.

Our current project is four interior doors for a New York family. With the desire to bring nature and character into their NYC apartment, Geoff selected 4 different live edge wood panels—English Wych Elm, Olive, Big Leaf Maple and European Walnut. This project began with creating a mahogany frame for each door. Each live edge board is then sanded and routed to accept the custom-shaped mahogany splines that fill the space between the live edge and frame. To bring out the beautiful wood grain, each panel will receive 3 coats of hand-rubbed tung oil. We look forward to showing you the final pieces in May.
Image above shows unfinished English Wych Elm door with an example of an oiled English Wych Elm board (left) in the background.
Custom Piece Opportunity ~ What’s Your Dream?
Geoff will be delivering these custom doors and visiting Hearne Hardwoods mid-May. If you would like to give some beautiful wood a second life, Geoff can select the perfect live edge board for your project. Please contact Geoff to discuss your table, desk, door or other furniture. Contact Geoff by May 10th – we’re ready to fill our empty van before returning to the Studio! Thank you.

Geoffrey Warner Studio received a Great Idea Grant (GIG) in April of 2011 from the Maine Arts Commission. The GIG award allowed Geoff valuable design and sourcing time to develop two more successful products for our line of Owl Furniture. We are proud to introduce the Peanut Desk and Rolling Owl Stool.
The Peanut Desk features a steam bent knee brace which gives the leg structural integrity and aesthetic beauty. Drawing sketches, creating mockups, and collaborating with outside vendors allowed Geoffrey Warner Studio to develop and successfully introduce this knee brace feature into our line of tables and desks.
With the aid of the award, we also developed the Rolling Owl Stool. We applied our ergonomic Owl seat to a rolling 4-legged base—to create a perfect mobile stool for office environments. We outsourced the pedestal bases to Midcoast Powder Coating of Belfast to apply our four new design colors. Since its introduction in Oct of 2011 we have sold over 30 Rolling Owls. With the aid of the expanded Owl Furniture line, GW Studio increased 2012 first quarter sales by ten-fold compared to 1Q2011!
The GIG supported us in our preliminary research and design for the two Owl Furniture pieces mentioned above. The funds helped GWS to sustain growth in the business while honoring our philosophy to support community, economy and ecology. We continue to make affordable furniture available to our friends and neighbors and support jobs in Maine while creating smart designs and beauty from wood.
Thank you to the Maine Arts Commission for their valuable support.

After months of design work and painstaking adjustment our efforts are just about to bear fruit. Iana designed our new website during the winter and turning it into a fully functional website with the able assistance of two patient souls half a world away has taken weeks but has also resulted in much learning and, we think, a beautiful new experience for visitors to our website. The new look highlights the beauty of the amazing woods we are privileged to use and features images from our growing photo archives that speak volumes about why we do what we do and how others are drawn into our world of handcrafted furniture and innovative design here on the tip of a little island off the coast of Maine.
We hope you will enjoy the new website and continue let us know how we can serve your needs going forward.
Now Iana can get back to what she dearly loves . . . digging in the garden!
